Personality & Traits

General Overview Sora is a lively, warm-hearted and quick-witted young woman with a stubborn streak and a mischievous sense of humour. Naturally curious and fiercely independent, she approaches life with enthusiasm, enjoying new experiences, good company and the occasional bit of harmless trouble. She's intelligent, resourceful and remarkably capable under pressure, though her confidence can sometimes border on recklessness. Beneath her outgoing nature lies a more guarded individual who struggles with trust, authority and accepting help from others. Fiercely loyal and protective of those she cares about, Sora can be surprisingly affectionate once someone earns her trust. Her difficult past has left her with unresolved grief and occasional insecurities, but she refuses to let those experiences dictate her future. She's determined to enjoy the life she's worked so hard to build, even if she doesn't always know quite how to go about it.
Strengths & Weaknesses Sora's greatest strengths lie in her resourcefulness, ingenuity and natural aptitude for engineering. Accustomed to working with limited resources, she's adept at thinking on her feet, improvising solutions and making seemingly useless equipment functional again. She performs particularly well under pressure, where her practical instincts and determination often shine. However, that same determination can become stubbornness, and she sometimes struggles to recognise when a problem is beyond her ability to fix. Her unconventional upbringing has also left gaps in her technical knowledge, particularly when dealing with advanced Starfleet systems. Although she's a quick learner, her confidence can occasionally outpace her experience, leading her to overlook procedures or take unnecessary risks.

Sora is fiercely independent, adaptable and remarkably perceptive when it comes to reading people and recognising danger. Unfortunately, those instincts also make her suspicious of authority, reluctant to accept help and occasionally defensive when her judgement is questioned. She's loyal and protective of those she cares about, sometimes to her own detriment, although past betrayals have made earning her complete trust difficult. Her warmth, quick wit and natural charm allow her to make friends relatively easily, but she can use humour or deflection to avoid uncomfortable conversations. Beneath her confidence lies a young woman still struggling with guilt, unresolved grief and a fear of losing those closest to her. While she's developed considerable emotional resilience, these vulnerabilities can cloud her judgement, particularly when confronted with situations that remind her of past failures. Learning to trust others, accept her limitations and recognise that not everything can be fixed remains an ongoing challenge.
Ambitions Professional: Sora wants to establish herself as a capable Starfleet engineer, developing her natural talents into genuine expertise while earning the respect of her colleagues. She's not particularly concerned with rank or command, but hopes to become someone others can depend upon when things go wrong.

Personal: Sora wants to build a happy, fulfilling life with friendships, love and experiences she once thought were beyond her reach. She hopes to discover what became of her mother and whether reconciliation is possible, while also finding answers about the El Aurian father she never knew and why he abandoned them. Despite everything she endured, part of her still wants to return to Vespera IV someday, perhaps to help those who never had the opportunity to leave.
Hobbies & Interests Music has always been one of Sora's greatest pleasures, and she's an exceptionally gifted singer with a particular fondness for old recordings, acoustic performances and songs she's picked up from different cultures. She often hums while working, sometimes without realising it, and thoroughly enjoys karaoke, although her dancing abilities leave considerably more to be desired. She has a soft spot for obsolete technology, particularly old music players and electronic curiosities, and finds something immensely satisfying about restoring something others would simply throw away. Sora also enjoys card games, having developed a talent for bluffing and reading opponents during her less respectable youth, although she's an embarrassingly sore loser when someone gets the better of her. Since leaving Vespera IV, she's developed an enthusiasm for exploring unfamiliar places, particularly beaches, forests and other natural environments she rarely experienced growing up. She's equally happy spending an evening laughing with friends, discovering new foods or indulging in a little harmless trouble. Having spent years counting every credit and ration, she still gets an almost ridiculous amount of enjoyment from small luxuries, whether that's a particularly good dessert, a new outfit or simply having somewhere comfortable to curl up with music and absolutely nothing demanding her attention.

Personal History Sora Arden was born in 2375 on Vespera IV, a Federation colony that had already been devastated by the Dominion War. Once a prosperous settlement with a growing industrial economy, established infrastructure and a promising future, the colony had suffered extensive damage during the conflict. Its orbital facilities had been crippled, entire communities destroyed and much of its population displaced. Although the Federation promised reconstruction after the war, assistance became increasingly inadequate as resources were directed towards rebuilding other affected worlds. Corruption within the surviving colonial administration allowed criminal organisations to intercept relief shipments and seize control of essential infrastructure. By the time Sora was old enough to understand the world around her, Vespera IV had descended into a patchwork of gang-controlled territories where drugs, violence, exploitation and extreme poverty were commonplace.

Her mother, Anika Arden, was Human and had once worked within the colony's civilian supply network. Her father, an El-Aurian whose identity remains unknown, disappeared shortly after Sora's birth. Anika rarely spoke of him, offering little beyond vague and occasionally contradictory explanations for his departure. For much of her childhood, Sora believed her father had simply been another Human colonist who'd abandoned his family. Despite the increasingly desperate circumstances, Anika initially did her best to provide her daughter with a loving home. Their apartment was small and frequently without reliable power or running water, but Sora remembered evenings spent together, her mother singing while preparing meals and the occasional little treat that made their circumstances feel almost normal.

Unfortunately, those happier memories became increasingly distant as Anika's circumstances deteriorated. Struggling with the pressures of raising a child alone, unemployment and the worsening conditions outside their home, she began using narcotics to cope. What started as occasional use developed into dependency, bringing unpredictable behaviour, financial difficulties and increasingly questionable acquaintances into their lives. Sora learnt to fend for herself, concealing what little money they had, finding food and attempting to keep their ageing appliances functioning. There were periods when Anika managed to regain some stability, only to relapse and disappear into the company of people who exploited her addiction. Eventually, mounting debts resulted in their home being seized, leaving Sora without a permanent place to live.

By the age of eight, Sora had become accustomed to moving between temporary accommodation, abandoned buildings and the homes of acquaintances willing to shelter her. During this period, she encountered Elsi Brant, an older woman who operated an informal refuge and salvage business known locally as The Lantern. Elsi had neither the resources nor the influence to protect everyone who came through her doors, but she maintained a few firm rules and did her best to ensure vulnerable children had somewhere reasonably safe to sleep. She became a surrogate mother to Sora, providing food, occasional lessons and a degree of stability without attempting to restrict the girl's independence. Their relationship was affectionate but occasionally argumentative, particularly as Sora grew older and became increasingly determined to manage her own affairs.

It was around this time that Sora met Kellan Voss, a boy approximately a year older than herself. Their first encounter was hardly friendly, involving a disagreement over something both had attempted to steal, but their rivalry gradually developed into a close friendship. Kellan was confident, resourceful and considerably more comfortable confronting people physically, while Sora possessed a sharp mind and an emerging talent for understanding machinery and electronic systems. Together, they discovered that their combined abilities could get them into places neither could access alone. What began with petty theft and scavenging eventually developed into more serious activities as they became familiar with the colony's criminal economy.

Sora's education was unconventional and often interrupted. The remaining schools were poorly maintained, and attending lessons regularly wasn't always possible. Much of what she learnt came through practical experience, informal teaching and examining whatever technology she could acquire. She developed a particular fascination with electrical systems, discovering that damaged equipment could often be repaired or repurposed with enough patience and ingenuity. Old Federation machinery, abandoned industrial facilities and discarded electronic components became valuable sources of knowledge. Her abilities eventually allowed her to earn money repairing equipment, bypassing security systems and modifying devices for people who preferred not to ask too many questions.

Not all those activities were harmless. Throughout her adolescence, Sora participated in theft, smuggling, identity fraud, illicit trading and the occasional sabotage of equipment for payment. She transported contraband, including narcotics, and sometimes worked for individuals she knew were dangerous. Some of her decisions were motivated by genuine necessity, while others offered relatively easy money or the excitement of getting away with something. She wasn't always particularly concerned about who might suffer from her actions, especially when the consequences weren't immediately visible. There were occasions when she regretted what she'd done, but regret rarely provided food or somewhere to sleep. Her resourcefulness kept her alive, although it also brought unwanted attention from criminal organisations who recognised the value of her abilities.

Growing up on Vespera IV also exposed Sora to the colony's more predatory inhabitants. She quickly learnt which districts to avoid, how to recognise dangerous intentions and when confrontation was more likely to make a situation worse. Kellan became increasingly protective of her, particularly as he grew into a physically imposing and capable young man. Although Sora appreciated his concern, she resented the implication that she needed him to make decisions on her behalf. Their disagreements became increasingly frequent, even as their attachment to one another deepened.

Despite the difficulties surrounding them, Sora's childhood wasn't entirely unhappy. She had friends, attended makeshift parties and occasionally enjoyed the sort of foolish adventures common to teenagers everywhere. Music became one of her greatest pleasures, particularly singing, for which she displayed a remarkable natural talent. Old recordings, salvaged entertainment systems and informal gatherings provided opportunities to discover new songs and perform for friends. She could be lively, mischievous and surprisingly competitive, particularly during card games and other activities where her ability to bluff gave her an advantage. She also experimented occasionally with recreational drugs, though witnessing her mother's dependency left her wary of developing similar habits.

As Sora and Kellan entered their teenage years, their friendship gradually developed into a romantic relationship. Having known one another through years of hardship, they shared a familiarity and trust that neither had experienced with anyone else. Kellan could be charming, generous and fiercely loyal, but he was also stubborn, arrogant and increasingly convinced that his responsibility was to protect Sora from the dangers surrounding them. Their relationship was affectionate and frequently argumentative, with both possessing strong personalities and little inclination to back down. They nevertheless remained devoted to one another, finding comfort in their shared experiences and making increasingly elaborate plans to escape Vespera IV together.

They spent years collecting whatever money and valuables they could, investigating transport arrangements and studying routes off-world. Occasionally they came close to securing passage, only for circumstances or dishonest intermediaries to destroy their plans. During their childhood, Kellan had developed a habit of reassuring Sora whenever things went wrong with the words, "We always find a way." The phrase became a private expression between them, sometimes sincere and occasionally used to tease one another after a particularly foolish mistake. They genuinely believed that, eventually, they'd find somewhere better to build a life together.

By 2392, however, the situation on Vespera IV had become increasingly dangerous. Sora's technical abilities had drawn attention from several criminal organisations, while Kellan was growing frustrated by their continued inability to leave. His desire to protect her had become entangled with his pride, particularly when her expertise proved more valuable than his own abilities. Without consulting Sora, he entered into negotiations with a powerful criminal syndicate that offered them legitimate identification, money and transport off-world. In exchange, the syndicate wanted access to the power distribution and security network protecting a residential district. Kellan knew Sora possessed the necessary access information, having trusted him with some of the modifications she'd made to the ageing system. Convinced the syndicate merely intended to disrupt a rival organisation, he secretly provided the information.

The consequences were catastrophic.

The syndicate used the compromised network to launch an assault upon the district, disabling essential infrastructure and attempting to gain access to civilian shelters where dozens of residents had sought refuge. Sora discovered what had happened as the attack unfolded and immediately began working to isolate the shelters from the compromised systems. Kellan, realising he'd been deceived, attempted to reverse his actions and warn her, only to become trapped within a damaged maintenance section as the security barriers sealed. By then, spreading fires and failing environmental systems were making his position increasingly dangerous.

Despite learning of his betrayal, Sora refused to abandon him. She worked desperately to restore damaged connections, reroute power and identify an alternative escape route. Eventually, she discovered a way to release the barrier isolating Kellan without fully opening the civilian shelters. The solution was dangerous, requiring a temporary reduction in the shelters' protective systems while power was redirected. Sora believed she could complete the sequence quickly enough to retrieve him before the attackers exploited the weakness.

Kellan, however, understood the risk and knew that another mistake could cost dozens of innocent lives. Unwilling to gamble their safety on his survival, he deliberately disconnected the emergency power cable on his side of the barrier, destroying the route Sora had established. Unable to restore the connection remotely, she pleaded with him to reconnect it, furious that he had once again made a decision for both of them. Their final conversation was conducted over an increasingly unreliable communications link, with Sora reminding him of their promises and the future they'd planned together. Kellan apologised for his betrayal and admitted that he'd only wanted to get them away from Vespera IV. She remained connected to him for as long as possible, listening helplessly as his condition deteriorated, until he eventually stopped responding.

The civilian shelters remained secure, and dozens of people survived the attack. Kellan was eighteen years old.

His death devastated Sora, leaving her struggling with grief, anger and an overwhelming sense of guilt. She knew Kellan had caused the disaster through his own decisions, yet couldn't escape the belief that she might have found another solution if she'd been quicker or more capable. Equally painful was the knowledge that he'd deliberately prevented her from saving him, repeating the very behaviour that had contributed to his betrayal. She loved him deeply, but her memories of him became inseparable from resentment and the questions she could never ask him.

The aftermath made remaining on Vespera IV increasingly dangerous. The syndicate responsible for the attack knew of Sora's involvement and recognised the value of her technical knowledge, while some residents suspected she had contributed to the original security breach. With few places left to hide, she became increasingly reckless and withdrawn, taking questionable jobs and attempting to distract herself from her grief. Elsi eventually recognised that Sora's continued presence on the colony would almost certainly lead to her death. Through contacts involved in distributing Federation humanitarian assistance, she arranged for Sora to leave aboard a civilian relief freighter.

Sora was initially reluctant to abandon the only world she'd known, particularly while her mother's whereabouts remained uncertain. Nevertheless, Elsi convinced her that remaining wouldn't change what had happened. In 2392, Sora finally escaped Vespera IV, carrying little beyond a few personal belongings, an old photograph of herself and Kellan, and the oversized hoodie he'd given her years earlier.

Reaching Federation-controlled space presented difficulties of its own. Much of Sora's documentation had been lost or rendered inaccessible during Vespera IV's administrative collapse, and verifying her citizenship required considerable assistance. Medical examinations also revealed that she was half El-Aurian, something she'd never previously known. Although her ancestry could be established genetically, the identity and whereabouts of her father remained a mystery, as did the extent of any characteristics she might eventually inherit. She subsequently received assistance with accommodation, education and medical care, experiences that initially left her uncomfortable and suspicious of the apparent willingness of strangers to help without expecting anything in return.

During this period, Sora began attending preparatory educational classes, where her unusual practical abilities attracted the attention of an engineering instructor. Although her academic knowledge was inconsistent, she demonstrated an intuitive understanding of machinery and an aptitude for learning technical concepts once given the appropriate foundation. Encouraged to consider Starfleet Academy, Sora was initially dismissive. She held considerable resentment towards the Federation, having grown up on a colony where promises of reconstruction had amounted to little. She remembered helping restore an old communications relay during her adolescence and sending an appeal for assistance that had been acknowledged but never meaningfully answered.

Nevertheless, the opportunity to pursue engineering professionally appealed to her. After considerable effort preparing for the entrance assessments, Sora gained admission to Starfleet Academy in 2392.

Her four years at the Academy were among the most challenging and rewarding of her life. Accustomed to relying upon herself, she initially struggled with strict regulations, structured learning and the expectation that she should trust others to fulfil their responsibilities. Her practical engineering abilities occasionally exceeded those of her classmates, particularly when improvisation or emergency repairs were required, but she encountered entire fields of technology and scientific theory with which she had little familiarity. Advanced propulsion systems, formal engineering methodology and aspects of theoretical physics demanded considerable study. She proved a quick learner, although her impatience and occasional overconfidence sometimes resulted in disciplinary warnings or poor decisions during practical exercises.

Academy life also exposed Sora to experiences she'd scarcely imagined growing up. She developed friendships, discovered new interests and gradually became more comfortable with a life that didn't revolve around immediate dangers. Music remained important to her, and her singing ability became something she could enjoy openly, rather than simply an occasional distraction. She also began growing her hair longer, having previously kept it short for practical reasons and personal safety. While she retained many habits from Vespera IV, she increasingly embraced opportunities to enjoy herself, experiment with her appearance and experience ordinary aspects of young adulthood.

Her adjustment wasn't without difficulties. Memories of Kellan and her childhood occasionally resurfaced through intrusive recollections and brief sensory experiences, sometimes triggered by particular sounds, situations or emotional states. On rare occasions, she might hear his voice or momentarily believe she'd seen him, although she remained aware that he was dead. Reluctantly, Sora engaged with the Academy's counselling services and developed strategies that helped her manage these experiences. Her progress was uneven, and she continued to struggle with unresolved grief, guilt and accepting help from others. She eventually had Kellan's familiar words, "We always find a way", tattooed horizontally across the inside of her left wrist, using his handwriting as a reference. It served as both a reminder of what they'd shared and something she could take strength from, even if the words sometimes carried a painful irony.

During her Academy years, Sora also began investigating the circumstances surrounding Vespera IV's abandonment. Access to Federation records revealed evidence of falsified reconstruction reports, missing relief supplies and repeated warnings about the colony's deteriorating conditions. While she came to appreciate the Federation's ideals and the genuine dedication of many Starfleet officers, those discoveries reinforced her belief that institutions could fail the very people they claimed to protect. Her resentment became more complicated rather than disappearing, leaving her determined to judge Starfleet by its actions instead of its promises.

Sora graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2396 with a commission as an Ensign, specialising in Engineering. Her initial assignment was aboard the California-class USS Hawthorne, where she served as a junior engineering officer. The posting provided her first genuine experience of the responsibilities and routines of starship service, helping her develop familiarity with contemporary Starfleet systems and the importance of working within an established engineering department. Although enthusiastic and capable, she remained inexperienced, occasionally frustrated by routine procedures and eager to demonstrate her abilities. Her time aboard the Hawthorne nevertheless helped her develop greater professional discipline and confidence.

In 2397, Sora received transfer orders assigning her to the Armitage-class USS Tokyo. The prospect of serving aboard a heavily armed rapid-response carrier was both exciting and intimidating, particularly given the ship's operational history and the experience of its established crew. For someone who had once struggled to keep ageing generators operational with stolen components, the opportunity to work aboard such an advanced starship represented an extraordinary change in circumstances.

At twenty-two, Sora remains very much at the beginning of her Starfleet career. She has found genuine happiness since leaving Vespera IV, although the experiences of her childhood continue to influence her relationships, decisions and view of the Federation. Her mother remains somewhere beyond her reach, her father's identity remains unanswered, and the death of Kellan Voss continues to occupy a complicated place in her life. Despite these unresolved aspects of her past, Sora is determined to make something of the opportunities she's been given, even if she's still learning how to accept that she deserves them.
